The short answer

Each POD platform has different file size limits for both listing images and digital download deliverables. Hit a limit and you can't upload — your business stops. Knowing the limits upfront lets you prepare files that work everywhere, plus optimize for delivery via ZIP or external storage when limits are exceeded.

This guide covers Etsy, Amazon Merch on Demand, Redbubble, Printful, and Printify — the 5 most common platforms POD sellers use.

01

Platform Limits Comparison

Platform Listing Image Digital Download Notes
Etsy20 MB / image, 12 max100 MB total, 5 files maxZIP for multi-file delivery
Amazon Merch on Demand25 MB / imageN/A (POD only, no digital download)PNG transparent design upload
Redbubble20 MB / imageN/A (POD only)PNG with transparency for products
Printful200 MB / imageN/A (POD)Generous limit — great for large designs
Printify100 MB / imageN/A (POD)PNG preferred for transparency

Etsy digital download caveat: The 100 MB total + 5 files max is restrictive. Use ZIP files containing many sub-files — counts as 1 file, total ZIP size up to 100 MB.

Why this matters

Hitting file size limits at upload time is a workflow killer. You've prepared the design, written the listing, set the price — and the upload fails. You need to recompress, restructure your files, or split into multiple downloads. Knowing the limits upfront lets you design for them. Etsy's 100MB total digital download limit is the most common bottleneck — large wall art bundles or high-res clipart sets can easily exceed it without planning.

03

When you'll hit limits

  1. Wall art bundles with 5 ratio variants at 8000+px each. Easily 30–50MB per file × 5 = 150–250MB → exceeds Etsy's 100MB limit.
  2. Clipart bundles with 50+ files in PNG transparent format. 5MB per PNG × 50 = 250MB → too big for Etsy.
  3. Multi-page printable planners or journals. 100+ page PDFs at high quality can exceed 100MB.
  4. Large posters at 24×36 print resolution. 7200×10800 PNG can be 60+ MB each.

Solutions when you exceed limits:

  • Compress with TinyPNG / Photoshop Save for Web (cuts 30–50% with no visible loss)
  • Split into multiple downloads (Etsy: split bundle into "Bundle Part 1" and "Part 2")
  • Use external storage link (Google Drive, Dropbox) — Etsy allows this in description
  • Reduce variant count (offer 3 ratios instead of 5)

Common mistakes

1. Designing without checking platform limits

Spending hours designing a 50-file clipart bundle, then discovering Etsy's 100MB limit prevents upload. Plan for the limit upfront.

2. Ignoring Etsy's 5-file limit

Etsy allows max 5 separate files per digital download. Always ZIP your bundle into ONE file (counts as 1 file, total size up to 100MB).

3. Submitting Quality 100 JPGs when 90 would work

Quality 100 = 5× larger than Quality 90 with imperceptible visual difference. Save Quality 100 for archival; ship Quality 90–95 to customers.

4. Ignoring listing image limits (20MB on Etsy)

Listing thumbnails don't need to be 20MB. Etsy compresses them on display. Use 1–3MB for listing images; reserve larger files for the actual download.

5. Not planning for ZIP size when bundling many files

100MB Etsy ZIP fits ~50 PNG clipart at 2MB each. Plan your bundle size against the limit during design, not after.
