Standard Poster Sizes
US and international poster sizes with exact pixel dimensions.
Poster sizing is a minefield. Do you design for US standard (11×17, 16×20, 24×36) or international (A4, A3, A2)? Do you design once and resize, or create unique posters for each size? This guide covers the 6 most common poster sizes, their pixel dimensions at 300 DPI, and the best strategy for Etsy sellers who want to offer multiple sizes without creating 10 versions.
Rule of thumb: Design for 24×36 (the largest standard size), then downsize for smaller formats. This prevents upscaling and quality loss. Downscaling always preserves detail; upscaling introduces blur.

Why this matters
Offering multiple poster sizes on Etsy increases your sales by 2–3× — some customers want 16×20 for bedrooms, others want 24×36 for office walls. But creating unique designs for 6 sizes is wasteful. The smart strategy: design for 24×36 (the largest size), then downscale for 18×24, 16×20, 11×17. This takes 2 minutes per size (Photoshop Image → Scale Image) and avoids upscaling blur. Downsizing preserves detail; upscaling introduces artifacts.
When to offer each size
US Sizes (most Etsy buyers):
- 11×17: Office, dorm, small bedrooms. Entry-level poster buyers.
- 16×20: Premium buyers, galleries, bold statement walls. Most popular after 24×36.
- 18×24: Large bedrooms, commercial spaces. Less common than 16×20 or 24×36.
- 24×36: Statement walls, galleries, corporate. The "wow" size—highest price point.
International Sizes (niche on Etsy, big on European platforms):
- A3: European standard, widely framed and stocked.
- A2: Large European size, galleries, events.
Common poster size mistakes
These sizing decisions kill poster sales:
1. Offering too many sizes (decision paralysis)
If you list 8×10, 11×17, 16×20, 18×24, 24×36, AND A3, AND A2, customers freeze. Offer 3–4 sizes: 11×17 (entry), 16×20 (popular), 24×36 (statement). A3 if selling internationally.
2. Upscaling small designs to 24×36
If your design is 2400×3600px (small), upscaling to 7200×10800px (24×36) introduces blur. Design for 24×36 first, then downscale. Never upscale posters.
3. Using non-standard sizes (oddball dimensions)
Custom sizes like 15×22 confuse customers (not framed anywhere) and hurt Etsy's categorization. Stick to standard sizes that customers recognize and can frame.
4. Mixing US and international sizes in listings
Don't list "11×17, 16×20, A2, A3" in one listing. Separate them: US tab offers 11×17/16×20/24×36; International tab offers A3/A2. Customers get lost otherwise.
5. Not testing how designs look at each size
A detail that looks great at 24×36 may be unreadable at 11×17. Print tests at all sizes before offering. Avoid thin lines, small text, fine details.
