Print-Ready Images for Printify

Printify connects your designs to dozens of print providers, each with their own specs. This guide covers the exact dimensions, DPI requirements, and format rules you need to know — plus how to handle the variations between providers.

Built for sellers on

Printify is a print-on-demand fulfillment connector, not a printer. When a customer orders your product, Printify routes the order to one of their partner print providers — Monster Digital, Awkward Styles, SwiftPOD, Dimona Tee, and dozens more. Each provider has their own printing equipment, color profiles, and dimension requirements.

This means the "correct" file specification on Printify depends on which provider fulfills the order. This guide covers the recommended specs that work across all major providers, product-specific dimensions, and strategies for handling provider variability.

File requirements

Product Category Dimensions (px) DPI Format Print Provider Notes
T-Shirt (Bella+Canvas 3001) 4,500 x 5,400 300 PNG (transparent bg) Most popular; spec varies by provider — 4,500 x 5,400 is the safe maximum

Dimensions shown are the safe maximums that work across most Printify print providers. Always check your specific provider's template.

Printify as a fulfillment connector: why specs vary by provider

The single most important thing to understand about Printify is that it does not print your products. Printify is a routing layer between your store (Etsy, Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.) and a network of independent print providers. When you select a product in Printify's catalog, you choose both the product type and the print provider who will manufacture it.

Different providers use different printing equipment, have different maximum print areas, and may require slightly different file dimensions. For example, a Bella+Canvas 3001 t-shirt printed by Monster Digital has a print area of 12 x 16 inches (3,600 x 4,800 px at 300 DPI), while the same shirt printed by Awkward Styles has a print area of 15 x 18 inches (4,500 x 5,400 px).

One design, multiple print providers

This provider variability is the defining characteristic of Printify. It offers more product options and competitive pricing through provider choice, but it requires you to understand that "Printify specs" are really "provider specs." The dimensions in this guide represent the safe maximums — the largest dimensions any major provider requires for each product. Uploading at these sizes ensures your design works regardless of which provider fulfills the order.

How to find your provider's exact specs

In Printify's product editor, click the "?" icon next to the design area or check the "Product details" panel. Each provider lists their exact print area dimensions, recommended DPI, and file format requirements. If you switch providers for the same product, the dimensions may change — always verify before publishing.

Product-specific templates and print areas

Printify provides downloadable templates for every product and provider combination. These templates show the exact print area, safe zone, and bleed area as vector guides. Using them is the most reliable way to ensure your design fits correctly.

However, if you are creating designs at scale or using automation, downloading a template for every product is impractical. The table below provides the detailed dimensions for the most popular Printify products across major providers.

Product Provider Print Area Pixels @ 300 DPI Bleed Required

Print areas vary significantly by provider. The same Bella+Canvas 3001 can have a 12x16" or 15x18" print area depending on who prints it.

The safe strategy: design for the largest print area

Create your design files at the largest dimensions any provider requires for that product type. If one provider uses 4,500 x 5,400 and another uses 3,600 x 4,800, design at 4,500 x 5,400. Printify will automatically downscale for providers with smaller print areas, and downscaling preserves quality. Upscaling does not.

Why the same file looks different across Printify providers

One of the most confusing aspects of selling on Printify is ordering samples from different providers and seeing noticeable differences in the output. The same design file can look significantly different depending on which provider prints it. This is not a bug — it is an inherent characteristic of working with multiple print facilities.

Color consistency is the biggest challenge

Each print provider uses different printers (Kornit, Epson, Brother), different inks (DTG, sublimation, screen print), and different color management profiles. A vibrant red in your design file may print as a warm orange on one provider's Kornit Avalanche and as a deep crimson on another's Epson SureColor. There is no way to guarantee identical color output across providers.

The three main sources of visual variation between providers:

  1. Color management. Each printer has an ICC profile that maps digital colors to physical ink output. These profiles are calibrated to the specific printer, ink, and substrate combination. Two DTG printers in different facilities will produce slightly different colors from the same input file, even if both are the same make and model.
  2. Print area and positioning. As shown in the product table above, the same Bella+Canvas 3001 can have a 12x16" or 15x18" print area depending on the provider. This means the same design may appear larger or smaller relative to the garment, and the vertical positioning on the chest area may differ.
  3. Substrate handling. Different providers pre-treat garments differently for DTG printing. Pre-treatment affects how ink adheres to fabric, which impacts color vibrancy, especially on dark-colored garments. White ink underbase application also varies, affecting opacity on dark fabrics.

The best practice: order samples from your chosen provider before committing to a product line. If you switch providers later (for pricing, shipping speed, or stock availability), order new samples to verify that your designs still look acceptable. Use sRGB color space in your files — it is the most universally compatible profile.

DPI requirements by product category

Printify products span a wide range of print technologies, and DPI requirements vary accordingly. Apparel (DTG printing) has different resolution needs than wall art (giclée or dye-sublimation). Understanding these differences helps you prepare files that are appropriately sized without being unnecessarily large.

Product Category Print Technology Recommended DPI Minimum DPI Why
Apparel (T-shirts, Hoodies)DTG (Direct to Garment)300150Fabric texture masks some detail loss; 300 DPI is ideal, 150 is acceptable
All-Over Print ApparelDye-Sublimation150120Large print area (full garment); 150 DPI at 20x24" = 3,000 x 3,600 px is standard
Posters & Art PrintsGiclée / Inkjet300200Viewed up close; requires highest resolution for sharp detail
CanvasGiclée / Inkjet300200Canvas texture hides minor imperfections, but 300 DPI ensures best results
Phone CasesUV Print / Sublimation300250Small product held at close viewing distance; resolution defects are highly visible
Mugs & DrinkwareDye-Sublimation300200Curved surface at moderate viewing distance; 300 DPI covers all providers
StickersDigital Print + Die-Cut300300Small size + close viewing; anything below 300 DPI is visibly soft
Home Decor (Pillows, Bags)DTG / Sublimation300150Fabric products; similar to apparel in resolution tolerance

DPI requirements vary by print technology and viewing distance. 300 DPI is the safe universal standard.

When 150 DPI is acceptable

For large all-over print garments and home textiles, 150 DPI is often the standard because the print area is so large (20+ inches) that 300 DPI would require enormous files. At 150 DPI, a full garment print is already 3,000 x 3,600+ pixels. The fabric texture and viewing distance compensate for the lower DPI. For everything else, stick with 300 DPI.

Wall art via Printify: canvas, poster, and framed print specs

Printify's wall art category includes canvas prints, posters, and framed art prints. These products have the highest resolution requirements on the platform because they are printed at large sizes (up to 36 inches on the long side) and viewed at close distance. Getting the file specifications right is critical for wall art — buyers are paying premium prices and expect gallery-quality output.

Canvas prints: understanding gallery wrap bleed

Canvas prints on Printify use gallery wrap construction, where the printed canvas wraps around the edges of a wooden stretcher frame. This means your image needs to extend beyond the visible front face to cover the wrapped sides. Typically, this requires an extra 1.5 inches (450 pixels at 300 DPI) on each side.

For a 16 x 20 inch canvas, the total image dimensions with wrap bleed are: (16 + 3) x (20 + 3) = 19 x 23 inches = 5,700 x 6,900 pixels at 300 DPI. If your design does not include this extra bleed, Printify will either mirror the edges (which can look unnatural) or leave white strips on the sides.

Canvas bleed is non-negotiable

If your design has critical elements (text, faces, key visual elements) within 1.5 inches of the edge, they will wrap around the side and be partially hidden on the front face. Always design with a generous safe margin. The visible front face is the canvas size minus the wrap on each side.

Poster prints

Posters are the most straightforward wall art product on Printify. The file dimensions match the print dimensions directly (no wrap bleed). Standard sizes: 12 x 18 (3,600 x 5,400 px), 18 x 24 (5,400 x 7,200 px), and 24 x 36 (7,200 x 10,800 px), all at 300 DPI. Printify's poster providers typically accept both JPG and PNG, though JPG is preferred for smaller file sizes.

Framed art prints

Framed prints include a mat border and frame. The image dimensions cover only the visible area within the mat — the mat and frame add physical size but do not require additional pixels. Design at the exact print area dimensions specified by your chosen provider. A 0.125-inch bleed is typically recommended to account for slight trimming variations.

Wall Art Product Common Sizes Max Pixels (300 DPI) Bleed / Wrap Recommended Format
Poster12x18", 18x24", 24x36"7,200 x 10,8000.125" trim bleedJPG 95% quality
Canvas (Gallery Wrap)12x16", 16x20", 24x36"8,100 x 11,7001.5" per side for wrapJPG or PNG
Framed Art Print8x10", 12x16", 18x24"5,400 x 7,2000.125" trim bleedJPG 95% quality

Canvas prints require the largest files due to gallery wrap bleed. Design at the maximum size to support all offerings.

Preparing images for Printify with Ratio Ready

Printify's multi-provider model means your design files need to be large enough for the most demanding provider, correctly formatted for the product type, and at the right DPI. Ratio Ready automates this preparation — upload your source image and get print-provider-ready files back.

The workflow: upload your image (any size, JPG or PNG), select your product type (apparel, wall art, or accessories), AI upscale to the provider's max print area, set 300 DPI metadata, and download the ready files.

For wall art sellers, the Wall Art Converter generates all standard ratio variants from a single master image, each at 300 DPI. Upload one design and get files ready for poster (24x36), canvas (with gallery wrap margins), and framed print products — all sized for Printify's largest provider dimensions.

Pre-upload checklist for Printify

  • File dimensions match your chosen provider's print area — check the product editor for exact dimensions. Different providers have different print areas for the same product.
  • DPI is set to 300 (150 minimum for all-over print) — 300 DPI is the universal standard. All-over print is the exception at 150 DPI due to large print area.
  • Transparent PNG for apparel and sticker products — DTG printing on apparel requires transparency so the garment color shows through the background.
  • Canvas files include 1.5" gallery wrap bleed — add 450 px per side (at 300 DPI) beyond the visible face for gallery-wrapped canvas prints.
  • Color profile is sRGB — sRGB is the most compatible color space across all Printify print providers and technologies.
  • No critical elements within the outer 10% of the design — edge areas may be trimmed, wrapped, or cropped differently by different providers. Keep key elements centered.
